CRDC in the news: Research results in gains for cotton industry (18 July 2014)

From ABC Rural: Things are looking bright for the cotton industry after the release of research highlighting the gains the industry has made.

Chairwoman of the Cotton Research and Development Corporation Dr Mary Corbett says the cotton industry has been transformed thanks to innovative research.

She says the industry is more sustainable and productive using less land and water than it has in the past.

"We have reduced the use of water by 40 per cent... today farmers are growing crop on 30 per cent of the land (they used to), we have reduced the use of insecticides by 95 per cent over 15 years and Australian cotton growers today now grow the highest yields in the whole of the world.

"You can never stop improving, and we are really at the point now where we are looking for other methodologies and new transformations to continue to expand the sustainability and the competitiveness of the industry on a global scale.

"It's about productivity gains they have made on farm, across the range... it's just better practices."
